Why you should never skip a car service

If you’re like most of us, you’ve skipped a car service or two in your time. If you thought it was just your dirty little secret, think again. You can hide your service from the world, but not from your mechanic and certainly not from your car or its log book.

Don’t get us wrong, skipping a car service isn’t the worst thing you could do, but while you may escape the initial price for it, your car or its warranty does not – to the tune of its own health and your financial long term health.

So before you’re tempted to skip another one, read up on why you should stick to your regular car service schedule.

Because it’s necessary

Your car’s vital lubricants, fluids and electronic and mechanical functions need to be changed, adjusted or checked at regular intervals to ensure the appropriate safety and reliable performance of components in your vehicle. Over time, things also will need to be refilled or even replaced in order to keep you and your car safe on the road.

In general, cars should be serviced every 12 months or every 15,000 kms (whichever comes first), however if you’ve missed one or even a couple, ask your mechanic if a 3 year service or one of our tailored solutions will help you catch up. Your car may even be at 6 months or 10000kms so it’s worth checking your log book service history to keep an eye on it.

Because it’ll help you prevent more serious damage

You may not hear every little thing that could be possible be wrong with your car, but a car service can help pick them up. Regular services can pre-warn you about major problems that could occur, enabling you to catch things early on before they become more serious (and more costly) issues.

After your service, your mechanic will provide you with a report outlining any emergency repairs that require urgent attention in order to avoid a potential hazard or breakdown.

Even more worryingly, some problems will not surface until it is too late. Modern cars can function much longer than older equivalents due to computers compensating wearing service items – however it is a misleading confidence that all is ok. For example if your engine oil goes too long without change it can clog up and destroy internal reciprocating parts, which can lead to engine replacement  – these run into several thousands of dollars to repair.

Because it’ll prolong your car’s life

Car services can bring many things to your attention but perhaps most importantly, they alert you to any mechanical failures that could not only have dangerous consequences, but could also reduce your car’s longevity. At the end of the day, a car that’s regularly serviced and tuned has an extended expected life-span over one that’s starved of attention. As a bonus, if you ever try to sell the car it’ll be worth more if it has a good service history.  It may feel like you’re spending more by servicing your car correctly, but the truth is, it costs much more not to service it over time.

World’s fastest drone

2017 The Fastest Drone Racing League sets at the Guinness World Records. The fastest ground speed run via a battery-powered remote-controlled and quad copter itself called a DRL Racer X. This drone hits at 179.6 mph.

The trial was done in the New York City (NYC) field – with an official Guinness World Records adjudicator to verify the speed of the drone. There was no prior record for this category but Guinness assigned that the minimum speed requirement would need to be 128 mph in order to be included in the record book. As the drone was hovering across a 100-meter-long field with the official record being the average of the top speed from each trial. So the official world record ended up being 163.5 mph.

The drone which is used to set the record isn’t the same one used in races. The drone used in the league’s races is called the Racer3 and has a top speed of 85 mph. However, this prototype RacerX is built on the same core platform as the Racer3, meaning one day the start-up may be able to mass-produce a drone as fast as the Racer X that can be reliably used in official races.

But this time, the prototype drone was just built to break the record and show off the future potential of DRL drones.

View point – During the trials of a prototype RacerX, it sets on fire while hitting the highest point of acceleration due to the batteries overheating, something that obviously can’t happen during real races.

Drive safe this monsoon

Driving in rain, whether a sprinkle or a heavy downpour, can be one of the most difficult driving situations a driver encounters. Rainy conditions are directly associated with higher accident rates. No matter what part of the country you live in, it is almost certain that you will be required to drive your vehicle in the rain at some point. Knowing how wet roads and reduced visibility affects the way your vehicle handles will help you stay safe when driving in rainy conditions.

How to maintain safety & continue with your journey

If you feel uncomfortable driving in the rain and can postpone your trip or commute, wait until the weather improves before driving. There is no reason to put you in danger if driving in wet conditions is not necessary.

Make sure that your car’s equipment is in working order before encountering rainy weather. Check your headlights, tail lights, and windshield wipers to make sure that they will work efficiently when they are needed. Also check the tread of your vehicle’s tires. Balding tires can severely reduce traction on wet roadways.

Slow down. Not only should you adhere to the posted speed limit when driving in wet weather conditions, you should drive considerably slower than you normally would. Wet roads are very dangerous. Your vehicle’s reaction time is much slower when it is raining. Reduced speed is imperative in rainy weather.

Most states require drivers to turn on their vehicles’ lights while driving in rain. Even if it is only misting, turning on your vehicle’s headlights will increase both your own visibility and other drivers’ ability to see your car on the road.

Use your windshield wipers. While this may seem like common sense, some people forget to turn on their windshield wipers in light rain. Most cars’ windshield wiper speed is adjustable to clear moisture from the glass in a light mist or in a heavy downpour. There are also several products available that can be sprayed or wiped onto the glass and claim to defer the collection of rainwater.

Keep a greater distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you. Stopping your vehicle will be more difficult when driving in the rain. Maintain a distance of several car lengths between your car and other vehicle.

Avoid heavy breaking. Try to slow your vehicle by taking your foot off of the accelerator earlier than you normally would in preparation to slow down or stop.

Watch out for standing water. Driving through standing water can cause your car to hydroplane, or skid across the surface of the road. Drive around places where water has collected by changing lanes or safely steering around such areas.

If your car hydroplanes, calmly take your foot off of the accelerator and steer in the direction that the front of your car needs to go. Avoid making sudden turns or slamming on your brakes.

Rain causes humidity levels to increase. You may find that your vehicle’s windows become foggy when you operate your vehicles while it is raining. Most cars’ ventilation systems include a function that will work to reduce this type of fog that develops on the interior of your windows and windshield. It may be necessary to pull over if you are no longer able to see through your windows.

While driving in the rain is simple if you make a conscious effort to utilize these safety precautions. Remember that reducing your speed and turning on your lights are two of the simplest and most effective ways of reducing the chances of an accident caused by wet weather.
